Marmaris Weather by Month: Temperature, Sea and Rain

Air temperatures, rainy days and sunshine hours in the table are the 1991–2020 climate normals of the Turkish State Meteorological Service's Marmaris station (World Meteorological Organization record). Sea temperature is the 2016–2025 average of two separate satellite and model datasets for the open sea south of the bay. The figures are averages; individual days can be hotter or cooler.

Day / night: average highest and lowest temperature (°C). Rainy days: days with more than 1 mm of rain. Sunshine: average hours of sunshine per day.

Most of the year's rain falls between November and February: 289 mm on average in December, only 1 mm in August. The highest temperature the station has recorded is 45.5° (August), the lowest −3.4° (February).

Spring (March–May): Green Hills, a Cool Sea

March is still cool and at times wet: 18° by day, 7 rainy days in the month. In April daytime temperatures rise to 22° and the rain eases; in May days reach 26° and rainy days drop to 4. The pine forests and hills are at their greenest in these months.

In spring the sea warms more slowly than the air: 17–18° in March, 18–19° in April, 20° in May. Plenty of people swim at the end of May, but for most the water still feels cool.

  • One of the most comfortable times of year for walking, the castle and the bazaar; see our Marmaris Castle and Old Town guide.
  • Evenings are cool; bring a jacket until the end of April.
  • A good season for long drives: the days get longer and the roads are quieter than in summer.

Summer (June–August): Hot, Dry and Busy

In July and August the daytime average is 35° and the night 24°; it almost never rains and there are 11 hours of sunshine a day. The sea reaches 26–28° in July and 28–29° in August. The afternoon sea breeze takes the edge off the heat on the shore, but in town and in the car the heat is tiring.

  • A car parked in the sun heats up very quickly; park in the shade where you can and open the doors to let the air out before getting in.
  • Never leave a child or an animal alone in the car, not even for a minute.
  • Carry water on long drives; in the midday heat (12:00–16:00) plan a drive or the beach rather than a walk.
  • On hot, windy summer days forest fires can break out in Muğla. Do not throw cigarettes out of the window or light fires in wooded areas; if you see smoke, call 112 and follow the officials' directions on closed roads.
  • July and August are the busiest months; set off early in the morning to find space in the bays and car parks.

Autumn (September–November): The Sea Is Still Warm

September feels like more summer: 31° by day, the sea at 27–28°, rain is rare. In October days drop to 27° and the sea stays around 25°; the first rains come in October, about 5 rainy days in the month. In November it is 21° by day and the sea 22–23°, but rainy days rise to 7.

In autumn the sea cools more slowly than the air, so in October you can swim at midday after a cool morning. October is a good balance for those who want both to swim and to explore by car.

Winter (December–February): Mild but Wet

Winter in Marmaris is mild: 17° by day in December, 15° in January, 7–9° at night. But it is the wettest time of year; in December and January it rains on about 11 days a month, and the rain is often short but heavy. On sunny winter days walks along the seafront and trips to the villages are a real pleasure.

  • Some seasonal businesses, boat trips and hotels close in winter; check the place you want to visit before you go.
  • Roads get slippery with the first rains; slow down on winding mountain roads and leave a longer gap.
  • On the higher stretches towards Muğla the road can be icy on winter mornings; take care early in the day.
  • Days are short: in December the sun sets around 17:50. Plan long trips so you are back before dark.

Marmaris Sea Temperature: When Can You Swim?

The sea is warmest in August (28–29°) and coolest in March (17–18°). For most people comfortable swimming starts in June and lasts until the end of October.

  • June: 23–25°. The start of the season; early in the month the water can still feel cool.
  • July–August: 26–29°. The warmest water of the year.
  • September: 27–28°. The sea is as warm as in August, the air a little milder.
  • October: around 25°. Still good for swimming; the evenings get cool.
  • November: 22–23°. Hardier swimmers go in on sunny days.
  • December–May: 17–21°. Cold for most people.

We describe the sea in each bay in our Marmaris bays and beaches guide.
