This is usually the first question on a visitor's mind before a Marmaris holiday: is my own licence enough, or do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP)? The short answer depends on your country, but if you're unsure, getting one before you travel is cheap, quick, and removes any doubt. Here's what to know.
What is an International Driving Permit (IDP)?
An IDP is a small, official, multilingual translation of your own national driving licence. It is never valid on its own — you always carry it together with your real licence. Its purpose is to make a licence that isn't in the Latin alphabet, or that a foreign official can't read, understandable.
Is my own licence enough on its own in Turkey?
If you hold a standard, photo-bearing licence in the Latin alphabet from an EU/EEA country, that licence alone is usually enough for a short tourist rental — an IDP isn't required. If your licence is in a different script (Cyrillic, Arabic, Chinese, and so on) or was issued outside Europe, carrying an IDP makes both police checks and picking up the car noticeably smoother.
These rules can change from time to time, so check with your country's embassy or consulate in Turkey before you travel if you want certainty. This page is general information, not an official legal source.
Where and when should I get an IDP?
- Only in your own country, before you travel. It cannot be issued after you arrive in Turkey or at the airport.
- It's usually issued by your country's motoring association — AAA in the US, the AA or RAC in the UK, ADAC in Germany, or an equivalent road authority or notary elsewhere.
- Applications are usually processed the same day, the fee is low, and you just need a valid national licence, a passport photo and ID.
- It's typically valid for 1 to 3 years — make sure it won't have expired by your travel date.
What does Traffix check at pick-up?
- Your valid, unexpired driving licence (together with an International Driving Permit if possible, for our international guests).
- Your ID or passport.
- A credit card in the driver's name for the security deposit (a cash deposit is accepted if you don't have one).
- Minimum age varies by vehicle category, usually 21–25 — check the vehicle's own page before booking.
Still not sure?
If in doubt, the safest option is to get an IDP in your own country before you travel — it takes minutes, costs little, and can only help, never hurt. You're also welcome to message us on WhatsApp or ask when booking for a clear answer for your specific nationality.
Distances and times are approximate and vary with traffic and season.

Frequently asked questions
Can I rent a car in Marmaris with a US driving licence?
Yes, but since US licences vary in format by state, we strongly recommend also carrying an International Driving Permit (IDP). It's easy to get through AAA before you travel.
I'm an EU citizen — do I need an IDP?
Usually not: a standard, photo-bearing EU-format licence in the Latin alphabet is normally enough for a short tourist rental. If you're unsure, carrying an IDP is still a good extra safeguard.
Can I get an International Driving Permit in Turkey or at the airport?
No. An IDP can only be issued in your own country, before you travel, by the authority that issued your original licence.
Can I still rent a car if I arrive without an IDP?
If your licence is in the Latin alphabet, has a photo and is clearly readable, you'll usually be fine. If you're unsure, message us before booking and we'll give you a clear answer for your nationality.
